Lead Bicycle Mechanic - Melbourne


We are looking for a well developed and experienced bicycle mechanic who will work closely with the owners to establish, fit out and operate our new MTB centric workshop and future workshops.

You will be responsible for the provision of build, maintenance and repair services for a wide range of bicycles (predominantly MTB and Gravel) with confidence.

A minimum of 5 years workshop operation and bike mechanic experience is required, preferably with a focus on mountain and gravel bikes.

Key duties: Establishing and operating the workshop, customer management, identifying mechanical problems and proposing solutions, performing workshop services for customers, providing quotes, operate workshop management software, supervise staff and trainees.

Personal attributes: mechanical aptitude, practical skills, dexterity, methodical, patient, quality focus, effective time management, problem solving, and attention to detail.

Previous bike mechanic experience is mandatory with an ability to demonstrate:

  • Understanding of mountain bikes and gravel bikes in terms of their specific characteristics and maintenance requirements

  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems, determine causes and decide on necessary action

  • Self-motivated, able to work independently in a team environment

  • Thorough knowledge of bike repair machines and tools, including their uses and maintenance

  • Ability to provide all of our proposed workshop maintenance and repair services for MTB and Gravel

  • High levels of customer service and management, including communication with customers about service progress, raising additional issues/concerns and/or additional costs.

  • Understanding of broader bike workshop operations.

  • Staff supervision.

  • Training junior mechanics.

  • Maintaining workshop and service delivery quality standards.

  • Flexibility to work weekends.

  • Police Check required.

  • Working with Children Check required.

Job Type: Full-time

Hours of work:

  • Standard weekly hours spread from Tuesday-Saturday


BOOTR Cheltenham is a social enterprise, operating as a newly created bicycle workshop focused on the rapidly growing Mountain Bike market.

We are passionate about Mountain Biking and part of our concept is to collocate the new workshop with a hands-on bike mechanic training facility for neurodiverse young adults, hence providing them an opportunity to build a career in our exciting industry.
