Responsible to:Bike Shed Manager & Committee Responsible for:Bike Shed Volunteers Location:Bike Shed at CERES, located at far east end of Lee St in Brunswick East VIC, part of CERES Community Environment Park, https://goo.gl/maps/gH5khQW3K8o Alternative Location: Work from home (as directed). Status:Temporary, part-time, 12-month contract Hours:8-16 hours per week, flexible depending on candidate, including Saturdays (occasionally Sundays), to support the opening and operation of the Bike Shed.
Position Purpose The Bicycle Mechanic & Assistant Manager role will work closely with The Bike Shed's manager to ensure the smooth operation of the organisation, widen its volunteer outreach, and actively seek and coordinate partnerships with local community groups. This position is partially funded through a Sustainability Victoria grant which included a particular focus on further including less represented demographics, such as women, into The Bike Shed’s community.

Responsibilities
Open and run the Bike Shed on public 'fix-your-own-bike' (FYOB) workshops as well as on 'regular' volunteer days, and sales days.
Helping members of the public fix their own bikes during public workshops with an emphasis on 'teaching rather than doing.'
Work closely with volunteers, teaching them bicycle maintenance skills and ensuring that all repairs are made to a high standard.
Ensuring that all materials are properly organised and recycled, showing others how to do the same.
Helping to make sure the Bike Shed remains clean and organised.
Working with the Bike Shed’s manager, committee, and volunteers to encourage and embrace a diverse community through the running of workshops and classes catering to a wide variety of backgrounds, needs, and requirements.
Attending committee meetings when required.
Work with the Bike Shed’s manager and committee to help grow the public 'fix-your-own-bike' (FYOB) workshops, helping to ensure they become a financially self-sustainable part of the Bike Shed’s core operations.
Manage ‘fix-your-own-bike’ (FYOB) days & ‘regular’ days specific for female-identifying & gender diverse members to attend
Required qualifications
Bike shop experience or equivalent relevant experience. Good to proficient range of bicycle mechanics skills; knowledge of older bikes and creative problem-solving in bicycle repair particularly valuable. There will be an element of learning & up-skilling for the right candidate.
Management experience and/or success in leading others.
Strong willingness to grow community initiatives.
Experience working with or managing volunteers in a community environment.
Strong interpersonal & communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively and communicate with colleagues, and volunteers.
Commitment to supporting the Bike Shed’s mission.
Strong organisational and communication skills with a proven ability to delegate and prioritise projects.
Commitment to open and direct and regular communication with the Bike Shed committee & manager.
Confident using a variety of computer programs and tools including point of sale systems, Office, and Google docs.
Passionate about bicycling as an agent for positive change.
Desirable Attributes
Experience working in the not-for-profit sector or volunteer organisations.
